An oriental rug in your house can bring a room to life as they are known for their rich colours and unique designs. Unfortunately like most rugs especially in the South African dust, they are prone to getting dirty. If you use the proper techniques to care for your rug, you can keep your rug looking new for a long time. Always check the rug’s label before you clean as they usually come with instructions on the safest way to clean your Oriental rug and what material they are made of.

  1. Vacuuming your rug on both sides at least once a week will lift recent debris and dirt from it and keep it smelling and looking new for a longer time. Vacuuming also prevents the wool fibers in your rug from becoming packed down. However please don’t vacuum antique or silk oriental rugs as it can damage them and reduce their value. If your rug is small enough for a good shaking, take it outside and shake the debris out from the pile.
  2. Sunlight damages your rugs so keep them away from windows and doors if you can. Sun seeping into your home will naturally fade your rugs but by rotating them every month the fade will be consistent throughout the rug.
  3. Heavy pieces of furniture that sit on top of your oriental rug can work down the fibers and damage your carpet over time. Move your furniture around occasionally even if it is a few centimetres. This will even out the wear and tear on your rug and increase its longevity.
  4. Opppssss a spill! It’s best to tend to spills as soon as they occur because if they dry it will be much harder for you to get the stain or smell out of your rug. Blot up as much of the liquid as you can, with a paper towel or clean rag. Once you’ve soaked up the spill, dampen a rag and use cold water to blot the stain again. Do not rub back and forth because you could end up rubbing the stain deeper into the carpet and damage the fibers.

If your rug is expensive, made of material like silk, or has sentimental value, it may be a good idea to take it to a professional rug cleaner rather than trying to do it yourself. At Rugmaster we have years of experience working with different types of rugs and will know the best course of action for your problem.
